Japanese Tea Rose and Sakura Blossom

The studio is alive with the fragrance of Japanese Tea Rose and Sakura Blossom.  We are hard at work on our new Solid Perfume singles.  Each fragrance takes on a special meaning for me.  I have always loved our Japanese Tea Rose.  It has a wonderful, fresh green top note that is unlike most Rose notes I encounter.  When I first tried our Sakura Blossom (also known as Cherry Blossom) I was intrigued.  It had a definite fruit body but possessed this lovely floral attribute that was unique from any fruit note we used before.  I learned that in Japan many people celebrate the bloom of the Cherry trees by celebrating the Hanami, a gathering of friends and family under the trees to take in their gorgeous fragrance and admire their beauty.  The two notes balance one another so beautifully and are so blendable - I am wearing the Japanese Tea Rose with our Cedar, Musk & Patchouli today.  Happy Saturday!

 We are hard at work on new palettes.  Each palette needs to represent a fresh collection of four finished fragrances that also work well together.... that is the key.  It is not enough for each to smell wonderful.  They need to possess attributes that allow them to take on even more wonderful characteristics when they are worn together.  The seven finished fragrance discs above are the top contendors for one fragrance.  We started with about 35 variations! 

Please don't misunderstand.  I do not see this as a problem.  A wonderful challenge is more like it!   A few things about Melange Perfumes.

1.  We build our fragrances in-house.  What does that mean?  We do not order a bottle of fragrance from a lab and pour it in wax.  We formulate all of our blends here.  Note by note.  Bottle by bottle.  We think you are worth it.

2.  We hand-pour.  Machines never get it right.  I speak from experience. 

3.  We believe in small batches.  I dont want to wear a bottle of perfume that was poured 10 months ago and left on a shelf until I ordered it.   You shouldn't either. 

4.  We think the perfect fragrance for you is the one that makes you happy.  That is why we encourage you to use your own creativity and blend (melange!). 

5.  Perfume should be accessible.  What does that mean?  It shouldn't cost a fortune.

New Melange Solid Perfumes for 2011

I always like to take time in January to add or embellish fragrances for the new year.  Thanks in large part to the popularity of our new Blending Palettes we received a lot of feedback from customers.  Many wanted to see those blends in our Melange Solid Perfume singles. 

Our Plum Blossom solid perfume is now Plum & Tobacco Leaf.  I adore our Plum Blossom because it balances a crisp fruit note and a sparkling floral blossom so effortlessly.  When you add the Tobacco Leaf the fragrance takes on a whole new dimension. 

Melange Vanilla Orchid solid perfume is now Vanilla Orchid & Plum.  While the marriage of a Tahitian Vanilla blossom with fresh Ume Plum may not seem like a logical choice, it is the single most lauded blend in our Amber Notes Palette -- we even added a bit of Amber to complete the blend.

Melange Perfume Blending Palettes - Think Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

Every October we are reminded to Think Pink to promote Breast Cancer Awareness.  This year, Melange Perfume has partnered with the National Breast Cancer Foundation.  The NBCF is an amazing organization that promotes breast cancer prevention and awareness through low or no-cost screening and mammogram services and education.  My Grandmother died of breast cancer, which she may have been able to treat had she taken advantage of regular screening.

During October, Melange Perfume will donate 20% of all proceeds from the sale of our Solid Perfume Blending Palettes in our pink Floral Notes Palette on our website.  We will also donate from our wholesale orders to our many stores.  If you are interested in purchasing a Palette from a store near you, please check the locations page on our website.

Several years ago I had dinner with a editor from Women's Wear Daily. I had just opened my store Melange Apothecary and was busy custom blending in-store with my clients and observing their preferences.  To keep things moving in the store, I developed small solid perfumes in the most popular fragrance notes and placed them away from the fragrance bar.  They were an instant success -- but not for the reasons I thought.  People began to mix and match the solids, much the way they did the perfume notes at the fragrance bar.

She loved the solid perfumes.  When she asked me what I wanted to do next I casually replied "I am going to develop blending kits so people can mix and match the solid fragrances, they should be ready shortly".  Fast forward 3 years, countless blends and prototypes and a lot of watching and listening to what our customers and retailers liked most.

Why Do We Number Melange Perfumes??

Why Do We Number our Melange Roll-0n Perfumes?

Each of our 15 perfume blends is inspired by the most sought-after notes in custom blending. They took years to perfect and are still prepared in small quanties to ensure they are fresh. They are numbered in the order they were created. Along the way, we stopped using alcohol. This dramatically changed the perfumes for the better. The beauty of each fragrance note emerges and remains largely unchanged over time. The perfumes have a longer shelf life. Our base of coconut oil fractions is odorless, colorless and natural. Hawaiian Kukui Nut Oil is a natural antioxidant and lends to the beautiful consistency of the perfumes. It costs more to make perfume this way but it is absolutely worth it.


Finally, people love our perfumes for the way they smell. By not listing the notes on the box we remove some preconceived notions people may have about certain fragrances. For instance, I adore and wear No. 8 - a blend of Amber, Vanilla and Plum, yet under most circumstances I do not care for vanilla in any product..... Exploring them is a purely sensory pursuit!

LAVENDER IN BLOOM - MELANGE PERFUMES

This is the view from my office.

I have always loved Lavender.  Living in Southern California, it is easy to grow & thanks to Sperling Nursery we grow several varieties. We have Spanish, French and English Lavender.  And yes, each smells different to me.  

I love to rub my fingers over the stalks and take in their fragrance.  If I move on to the Rosemary and do the same one of my favorite bath blends comes to life. 

Before we began to create Melange Perfume for other stores, we stocked Lavender essential oils in our previous store, Melange Apothecary.  For custom blending, we usually used the French or Bulgarian varities.  The French was a traditional sweet fragrance and was beautiful blended with other floral notes and warm notes, such as Sandalwood and Amber.  My favorite was the Bulgarian Lavender.  Bulgarian Lavender has a marvelous fresh fragrance and a earthy quality I find quite beautiful.  It is beautiful blended with Rosemary, Eucalyptus, and citrus notes such as Bergamot or Mandarin.  Most people who selected Lavender for blending did not use it in perfume (hence the decision not to use it for Melange Perfumes).  It was most popular in Bath & Body Oil, Bath Salts and Bath & Shower Gel. 

To manufacture even a small amount of Lavender essential oil requires a lot of flower buds and distillation equipment. Just for fun, I used a recipe for making Lavender Oil I found on http://www.wikihow.com/. Place your Lavender flowers in a jar of oil (I used Jojoba, though Olive Oil can also be used).  Cover and place in a sunny window.  After a few days, strain the oil over a bowl using a muslin cloth. Return that oil to the jar and place new flowers in the oil.  I repeated this process 3 times and was very happy with my Lavender Oil.  It will not be the same consistency as an essential oil, but it did not need to be diluted and was wonderful to use.  You can place the oil in a nice bottle with label for a gift.  I plan to try this for Mother's Day.
